St. Joe’s Wins Class S State Championship

Posted on 15 December 2010 by B. Reis

St. Joe’s won their second consecutive state championship last Saturday, defeating the Ansonia Chargers 49-28. On a night when Montrell Dobbs had yet another outstanding performance on the ground for the Chargers, St. Joe’s proved to be the clear cut champion with another dominating performance.

On a cold, December night at Rentschler Field, the Cadets were lead by quarterback Joe Della Vecchia to their third straight 40-point game. Della Vecchia, who was outstanding against Woodland and Valley Regional in the first two rounds, was 13 for 19 passing with 194 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Tyler Matakevich also had his biggest game of the playoffs. Held in check on the ground in St. Joe’s first two games, Matakevich rumbled for 124 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also was on the receiving end of 2 more touchdowns through the air.

Although the Cadets’ offense  put up a lot of points on the score board, Montrell Dobbs didn’t have too bad of a night either. Dobbs rushed for 305 yards on 52 attempts for Ansonia, making him the first player in state history to rush for over 300 yards in every playoff game. Dobbs had 3 touchdowns on the night, on his way to becoming the third leading rusher in the entire country.

Despite Dobbs’ valiant effort, he was the only thing going well for the Ansonia offense. Quarterback Elliot Chudwick threw two interceptions and had only 72 passing yards on the night. Nothing positive can come from giving the ball back off of turnovers to a St. Joe’s offense that has been playing as well as they have been.

When it was all said and done, the St. Joe’s Cadets were the Class S State Champions, winning a state title for the second year in a row. St. Joe’s won the Class SS State title last year, moving into Class S this year when the State Classes were condensed. The Cadets outscored their opponents by a combined score of 141-47 in the playoffs. Domination defined their three playoff games, while champions can define the 2010 St. Joe’s football team.

The Sub That Rose Above

Posted on 13 September 2010 by CastroMichael

Peter Morcey became a substitute teacher for Region 16 in 2000.

Before witnessing the joy of students as he enters a room, he was both a former teacher and a restaurant owner.

Morcey graduated from Crosby High School in 1958 and then later graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 1962 majoring in physical education.

In 1965 Morcey started teaching physical education at Wilby High School.

Morcey started his restaurant Morcey’s on Watertown Avenue in 1966 with his brother James. After 1975 Morcey bought out James’s portion of the restaurant and stopped searching to devote all his time to his business. Morcey claimed that his restaurant was “the biggest and best barbeque in the state.”

Some of the foods on the menu were spear ribs, chicken, burgers, hot dogs, seafood, and soup. Morcey employed twenty-five and worked over ninety hours a week. The business always stayed busy for all of the thirty-two years he ran it.

However, in 1998 Morcey decided that it was time to retire and sold his business for an offer that would give him the freedom to never have to worry about money again.

After three years of retirement Morcey started working at Long River Middle School as a substitute teacher. He worked there for seven years and now is on his third year at Woodland Regional High School.

Morcey claims that, “Being a Substitute teacher is a great job after a retirement.. I don’t have to be confined to one subject and I have a great time with the students and faculty.”

Heat causes Early Dismissal

Posted on 02 September 2010 by A. Klancic

Today, Thursday September 2nd, students and teachers alike will leave Woodland Regional High School at 10:50 rather than 2:05. The reason for the early dismissal were the high temperatures in the classrooms. The announcement was made over the intercom at about 9:05 this morning while the students were in their F block classes. Each block following the announcement will be about 30 minutes in length, and there will be no lunch or advisory. Also, all after school activites are cancelled due to the heat. School will resume again on Tuesday, September 7th which will be an A day.

Drums for Troops

Posted on 26 May 2010 by A. Klancic

On Thursday, May 20th there was a presentation ceremony held in Woodland Regional High School’s Auditorium. The presentation ceremony was for the organization known as Drums for Troops. Schools all across the lower Naugatuck Valley painted oil drums with various themes that showed pride for their country and home state. The ceremony was beautiful and the oil drums were each filled with goods and necessities that would be sent to the troops that are fighting overseas.

Drinking + Driving = Death

Posted on 06 May 2010 by J. Amato

Every half-hour, an ominous bell tolls through the halls of Woodland.  Glancing into the hallway, one may catch a glimpse of the the Grim Reaper as it floats soundlessly toward its next victim.  Who will be its next soul to claim?  A math student?  A cheerleader?  The school president?  An AP student?  A skateboarder?  A senior who has already been accepted into college with a scholarship?   Your friend?

Making good decisions about under-age drinking continues to be a major problem for teens.  And to better exemplify the appaling statistics of teen-drunk driving, Woodland Regional Student Council is presenting a dramatic interpretation of one of greatest loss of life amongst teens–the Day of Death.

When the bell tolls, one soul will “pass over” at the Grim Reaper’s beckoning.  This symbolic gesture represents a percentage of teens killed in drinking-related accidents each year.   According to S.A.D.D. statistics, roughly 28% of students aged 12-20 acknolwedge drinking within one month’s time.  Couple that with the 12.8% of drinking-related fatalities, 40% of which were caused by teens, and you can see how busy the Grim Reaper will be today.   Statistically, nearly twelve Woodland students could lose their lives to drunk-driving related fatalities.
